Are MPM Safeway Gates Right for You? A Practical Product Review

When it comes to barrier safety gates in busy warehouses, choosing the right solution can quite literally save lives.

If you're searching for a smart, reliable way to manage pedestrian crossings in forklift traffic zones, MPM’s Safeway Gate might already be on your radar. In this review, we break down the key features, benefits, and limitations of the MPM Safeway Gate to help you decide if it’s the right fit for your operation.

At Clarity Safety, we’ve been supplying polymer safety barriers and barrier safety gates to leading UK manufacturers for over a decade. As the exclusive UK distributor for MPM, we work closely with safety and logistics teams to deliver effective, site-specific solutions.

What Is the MPM Safeway Gate?

The MPM Safeway Gate is an intelligent, sensor-activated pedestrian safety gate, designed to integrate seamlessly with MPM’s PED 150, Link 150, and Pin 150 flexible barrier systems.

Safeway Gate

Available in widths from 400mm to 1 metre, the gate can be configured to open either inward or outward (but not both). It features:

  • A locking mechanism that automatically activates during forklift detection

  • A red/green beacon light mounted on the slamming post

  • A built-in adjustable microwave sensor to detect oncoming FLTs or other MHE

  • Impact-resistant components based on the PED 150 barrier, rated at over 18kJ

How Does the Safeway Gate Work?

The gate uses a microwave sensor to detect approaching forklift trucks. When an FLT is sensed:

  1. The beacon turns from green to red

  2. After a short delay, the gate locks automatically

  3. Once the FLT has passed, the beacon returns to green and the gate unlocks

  4. Pedestrians can then safely cross

This process removes the need for human judgment or interaction with forklift operators — significantly reducing accident risk at high-traffic crossings.

How Does It Improve Warehouse Safety?

Clarity’s customers use the MPM Safeway Gate to:

  • Prevent unauthorised pedestrian movement across high-risk forklift zones

  • Minimise miscommunication between pedestrians and machinery operators

  • Standardise crossing procedures across multiple facilities

  • Strengthen compliance with workplace safety standards

For operations with complex foot/vehicle flows, this gate adds a new layer of control and consistency.

Combine With Projected Crossings for Maximum Impact

Want to take things further? The Safeway Gate can be paired with our projected zebra crossings, which display highly visible walkways on the floor using LED or laser technology.

These interactive crossings don’t wear out like paint, improve visibility in all lighting conditions, and create a safer, more intuitive experience; especially when combined with smart barriers like the Safeway Gate.

Downsides: Is It Always the Best Fit?

Like any product, the Safeway Gate isn’t right for every site.

Here are a few points to consider:

  • The system gives right-of-way to vehicles, not pedestrians - though this can be adjusted with added stop signage

  • There’s a delay between detection and gate locking, which could briefly leave a pedestrian exposed (a safety override button is available to resolve this)

  • If your site doesn’t use MHE, or prioritises pedestrian flow above all else, the gate may offer limited value

  • It’s designed for integration with MPM barrier systems, so not all other brands are compatible

For the right environment, these are small trade-offs for a big increase in site safety.

So, Is the Safeway Gate Right for You?

If your site has active forklift routes, high foot traffic, or complex crossings, and you’re already using (or open to) MPM’s flexible barriers, then the Safeway Gate is a natural next step.

It’s not just about stopping people. It’s about introducing smarter, automated safety logic to your warehouse flow.
