Will LED floor marking projectors work outside in your yard?

Most companies are constantly on the lookout for new ways to improve safety in their yards. One of the latest trends for workplace transport traffic management is to use LED projectors to create floor projected warnings, directional signage and pedestrian walkways.

One of the big questions we get asked a lot is "Will they work outside?". The shorts answer is no, they wont in most cases but there are things you can do to improve pedestrian safety in your yard. We can, of course, use Pedestrian detection to identify when pedestrians are in an area they should not be and notify the FLT drivers. In this case, we also deactivated the door and projected onto the door.

The purpose of this article is to cover this off in more detail, and by the end of this article, you will know some of the latest and greatest ways to improve your workplace transport traffic management.

There are regular reports of near misses in yards for a number of reasons including:

  • Yards often have less than optimum lighting
  • High chance of external personnel/visitors especially with truck drivers
  • Foreign drivers
  • Loading and unloading of trailers involves a mix of pedestrians and FLTs

If you are reading this article then there's a high chance that you are facing one or more of these challenges. The good news? There are innovative solutions available that enhance pedestrian segregation while improving traffic control in these busy environments. Modern technology including polymer barriers, and interactive access systems are specifically designed to both streamline yard operations and more importantly, keep everyone safe.

Let’s explore some effective strategies tailored specifically for outdoor yards.

The challenge of pedestrian segregation in the yard

In busy yards, multiple activities are happening in conjunction at any one time, meaning that keeping pedestrians safe is challenging at the best of times. As workers move around, they are interacting with HGVs and FLTs in tight spaces, creating an environment where it takes one misjudgement for an accident to occur. Add to this the visual and audio distractions that the drivers face and pedestrian walkways can easily be overlooked.

To solve this issue, a long hard look must be had, to ensure that any solution proposed is specifically tailored to your environment. Without this level of customisation it is only a matter of time before an incident occurs that brings a whole host of other challenges.

The challenge for HGV truck drivers reversing trailers

When driving into the yard, it is likely to be the drivers first time in the environment and as the layout will be unique straight away they are on the back foot.

 - Foreign drivers - don't know the rules of the site

- Driven for several hours - may need to use a restroom

 - Have to get out the cab to open curtains and unstrap the load/mandatory checks

It is a big challenge for many companies to manage drivers and although many companies implement things like wheel stops, Taking drivers keys off them, and even having dedicated rig/derigging bays, the challenge still remains with drivers who dont know the rules or dont understand them.

Solution 1: 2M high GRD 200 from MPM

GRD 200
The 2M high GRD 200 bollard from MPM is a standout solution for pedestrian segregation in outdoor yards. The height is a huge advantage as it is clearly visible from a truck drivers mirror which sits between 2.4 and 3.3m depending on the model of truck.

Made with flexible polymer, the V0 fire rated GRD 200 can withstand harsh weather conditions while maintaining its bright colour and visibility. This barrier acts as a clear physical demarcation between moving traffic and foot traffic, enhancing safety significantly.

Solution 2: Safeway Gate

Access control is vital in enhancing safety within outdoor yards, especially where heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) operate. Safeway maglock gates offer an effective solution for this challenge.

These gates are designed with a magnetic locking system that secures entry points when vehicles are present. As soon as an HGV approaches, the gate locks automatically, preventing any unauthorized access by pedestrians.

This feature helps ensure that both drivers and pedestrians can navigate the yard without risk. The transparent visibility of the gates allows everyone to see when it’s safe to cross or enter.

Maglock technology can be integrated with traffic lights and other systems for better coordination. This combination enhances overall safety while maintaining efficient operations in busy environments.

Implementing these access controls not only protects personnel but also streamlines vehicle movement within your premises.

Solution 3: MPM LINK 150/3

LINK-150-3-2

When it comes to pedestrian segregation, the MPM LINK 150/3 stands out as a game-changer. This barrier is not just any ordinary divider; it's engineered from high-performance polymer materials that offer unmatched durability and strength.

Its robust design ensures that it can withstand the rigors of an active yard environment, protecting pedestrians while withstanding heavy impacts from vehicles. Unlike traditional barriers, this polymer solution won’t corrode or rust over time, making it a long-lasting investment.

The vibrant colours enhance visibility for both foot traffic and HGV drivers alike. No one wants to compromise safety in busy areas where movement is constant.

Moreover, its lightweight nature allows for easy installation and repositioning when necessary—ideal for dynamic workspaces. The MPM LINK 150/3 effectively creates safe pathways without hindering operational efficiency.

Solution 4: Automated Lifting barriers

Barriers-1

Automated lifting barriers are a game-changer for yard traffic control. These systems enhance efficiency while ensuring safety. They provide seamless access to authorized vehicles without the need for manual operation.

Imagine the convenience of a barrier that rises at just the right moment, allowing trucks in and out smoothly. This not only minimizes wait times but also keeps pedestrian areas secure from unwanted vehicle entry.

Installation is straightforward, integrating easily with existing security measures like MPM polymer barriers and Safeway maglock gates. The automation can be programmed to respond to key cards or license plate recognition, adding an extra layer of security.

In busy yards, time is money; automated lifting barriers contribute significantly by streamlining operations. Their robust design ensures durability against harsh weather conditions too. With these solutions in place, managing traffic flow becomes less of a challenge and more of an effortless task.

Solution 5: Traffic Lights

lights

Traffic lights can significantly enhance safety in your yard. They provide clear visual signals to both pedestrians and drivers, promoting better awareness of when it’s safe to cross or proceed.

Imagine a busy area where HGV trucks frequently maneuver. The addition of traffic lights can help manage this flow effectively. With designated signals for vehicles and pedestrians, everyone knows what to expect.

These systems are customizable too. You can program them based on peak operational hours or specific needs within your yard.

By incorporating modern technology into your traffic control strategy, you create an organized environment that minimizes risk. It’s about creating a seamless interaction between moving vehicles and foot traffic.

Additionally, integrating these lights with other solutions like MPM polymer barriers enhances overall safety measures even further. When combined with proper signage and access controls, the potential for accidents decreases dramatically.

Bringing it all together

The most important step is to bring all these aspects of safety together. By using integrating technology with all of these

Bringing all these solutions together creates a comprehensive approach to pedestrian segregation in outdoor yards. The challenges posed by heavy goods vehicles (HGV) and the need for safety in busy environments can be effectively addressed with the right tools.

The highly visible GRD 200 from MPM ensures that truck drivers are aware of their surroundings, reducing the risk of accidents during reversing maneuvers. Coupled with Safeway maglock gates, you have an added layer of security that keeps pedestrians safe while controlling access when vehicles are present.

Additionally, incorporating MPM polymer barriers like the LINK 150/3 enhances durability and visibility, offering strong protection against unauthorized entry. Automated lifting barriers provide convenience without sacrificing safety, allowing smooth transitions between vehicle and pedestrian zones.

Integrating traffic lights into your yard not only aids in directing flow but also reinforces awareness among both drivers and walkers about their shared space. These elements collectively create a safer environment where pedestrians can navigate freely without fear of vehicular mishaps.
