Who are UnILEVER?

Unilever is one of the world’s leading consumer goods manufacturers, producing globally recognised brands across food, hygiene, and homecare categories.

The Gloucester site operates within a fast-paced manufacturing environment where high volumes of product movement, vehicle traffic, and pedestrian activity must coexist safely and efficiently.

UNILEVER's Challenges

Unilever Gloucester was reviewing how pedestrian walkways and crossings were managed across the site, with a clear objective to make safety warnings and routes more interactive, visible, and reliable in a busy warehouse environment.

Key challenges included:

1.    Pedestrian and MHE interaction across multiple walkways and crossing points

2.   Previous concerns around mechanical fixings and water ingress, particularly in a food manufacturing environment

3.    Ensuring any solution aligned with Unilever’s ESG principles and reliability expectations

The Solution:

Clarity Safety worked closely with Unilever’s warehouse and HSE stakeholders to design a solution that balanced engineered protection, intelligent warning systems, and operational practicality.

The agreed solution included:

1. Clearly defined pedestrian walkways with future STOP signs to be implemented at key access points

4. Careful consideration of sensor specification, ensuring reliable detection of pallet trucks and forklifts without excessive activation

5. Use of chemical fixings to address previous concerns around mechanical fixings and environmental ingress

6. Correctly specified Polymer Impact Resistant Barriers alongside existing barrier
